Digital innovations and cultural challenges: towards a Riacquistu 2.O?

0

It is necessary to put into perspective, in the history of Corsica, the issues and the interest represented by the appropriation of digital tools, for its culture and its language, in a new process of emancipation. Over the centuries, this island, due to its political situation as a territory subject to a foreign power, has never had the possibility of truly initiating new dynamics, stemming from its own social body and its institutions, in what concerns a production that is specific to it. It can do it today, and that fact sounds like an imperative challenge.

After a beginning of emancipation, which affected only the language area in the late XIX th century with Santu Casanova , it was not until the early twentieth , with Corsistes and Cyrnéistes that the Corsicans began to give visibility of both figurative and linguistic order to their identity as a people.

After the end of this process following the Second World War and the putting under the extinguisher of the Corsican expression, it is necessary to wait for the 70s, beyond a start of revival from the middle of the 50s, so that a second Riacquistu allows the birth of a new dynamic, linking the image and the Corsican language, via audiovisual productions of journalists and directors, individual or associative initiatives, but also thanks to the Public Service, with the birth in 1982 and the development of regional television. This public Audiovisual will then multiply new programs, films and documentaries, not confined to the journalistic field alone.

In 1992, a new chapter opened, with the creation of a Territorial Antenna, going hand in hand with the statutory development of Corsica. There are also private channels, as well as production companies, broadcasting most of their productions on France 3 Corse. At the same time, the creation of ViaStella , a digital channel linked to FR3, enables the production of new content, in Corsican and French, and the co-production of numerous documentaries and films.

Today, Public Service Television is faced with the development of social networks and digital technology. In-house production of Corsican digital content, apart from a few programs that are difficult to develop and bring to life, seems increasingly difficult. Few of them find a real resonance with young audiences. As for the production houses, they only create very few productions in the Corsican language, because their distribution is of little interest to French channels, an essential horizon from an economic point of view for private producers and free directors. launches , which depend closely on aid from the National Center for Cinema and Animated Image (formerly the National Center for Cinematography -CNC- until 2009).

At the same time, Corsican society’s demand for its language and culture has never been so strong. The coming to power of the Nationalists in the Territorial Collectivity in 2015 is also a reflection of this. On this ground, as in many other fields, this Majority must be the instrument of a new act of reappropriation, if it does not want to betray the movement which brought it to the responsibilities.

In fact, this is indeed an unprecedented situation as regards the image and the word of the Corsican people. It no longer seems insurmountable, given the political situation and the context created by the digital age, to:

  • Give the Corsican language and culture a unique field of growth, gradually giving them back their legitimate place on this island
  • Promote this development with modern technical means, breaking definitively with a backward-looking form, which has weighed so heavily on representations of the Corsican language and identity
  • Ensure increased visibility, in Corsica and abroad, to this content, in order to transmit this identity to new and diverse audiences, young and old, islanders or from the diaspora, Corsicans or other origins.

If Corsica were to miss this Cultural Revolution, to let this immense opportunity slip away, that would be a terrible and incomprehensible failure, because today it has the material, human and institutional means to meet this challenge.

Many innovative projects, and several pre-existing media, are already part of this historical perspective. Perhaps tomorrow they will prove that Corsica can do da by sè , in a major area for the revitalization of its language and its culture.

A Riacquistu 2.0? Such is the hope of the author of these lines. The advent of this new stage in the reappropriation of our identity is undoubtedly possible, by relying on all the new possibilities offered by digital technology. All that is needed is to have the necessary will and daring, and to provide yourself with the essential resources to bring this project to life.
